Yahoo! Gets Ready for the Holiday Shopping Spree

Two new tools available

A division of Yahoo!, the Yahoo Small Business set the stage yesterday for a new trend in what one might call "holiday search" for online merchants. The two new tools enable the e-tailers to "automate the process of presenting shoppers with cross-selling suggestions, and creating
keyword lists to improve online marketing efforts. The new enhancements to Yahoo's e-commerce platform, Merchant Solutions, take advantage of data-driven insights into how customers navigate individual merchants' Web sites on their way to making purchases," as Michelle Megna of e-commerce-guide.com observes.

The former of the two products brought to life and use yesterday is the Merchant Solutions cross-sell tool that recommends complementary products based on the previous customers' purchases and navigation history data. It is a flexible tool that allows merchants to override the automated system and suggest themselves specific product combinations for cross-selling. "The cross-sell feature is powered by the same engine we use for our advertising placement technology, so you're getting a pretty powerful tool that provides a lot of value at the same price you're already paying," said Jimmy Duvall, senior director of e-commerce products at Yahoo Small Business. "Most external systems will start learning about your site behavior from the day you install moving forward, with our cross-sell feature, you're not starting from scratch, it's based on all the data from the day you opened your business."

The second tool is the new Keyword Finder feature that basically lets merchants know which keywords were used by shoppers to click on the online store and make purchases. The system automatically identifies as the most relevant and effective keywords using data from activity at the merchants' online stores as well as traffic driven by search marketing campaigns on Yahoo and other search engines, notes Megna. She also points out that the list of keywords can be downloaded saving enormous time on manual data entry.

Well that just made it all easier for the ones that sell, I'm expecting a tool from yahoo that will make it easier for me, allowing me to buy stuff on the internet using premiere I.O.U.'s because I don't see any other way of refraining from shopping online till I drop. The holidays tend to have that effect on people.
