Yahoo has come up with a new idea that could determine users to access the portal more often.
Upcoming.org is a sort of social life calendar, in which users post all announcements related to events, from rock concerts to picnics. The site even provides users with a series of tools with which they can share their points of view or identify their areas of interest.
Yahoo liked the idea so much that they decided to acquire the site founded by Andy
Baio, for an undisclosed sum of money. Yahoo will not integrate the site in the main portal content, but will use in the near future the event calendar in order to expand the local searching functions.
Another Yahoo service that could benefit from this acquisition is Yahoo 360, the portal's blogging section. Thanks to it, blog owners will be able to make reference to the events presented on Upcoming.org.
Over the last year, local searches have become an interesting area for the search engines, a significant number of clients wanting their ads to be viewed by users from a specific geographic area. All three major search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN are offering local searching services.
