Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) will be supported for the next five years, and a number of official flavors have expressed their interest in providing similar support.

The Ubuntu flavors are not bound to the same schedule as Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and the developers choose whether to make their operating system LTS.

Ubuntu developer Stéphane Graber is now asking the various flavor leads to confirm the LTS status of the Linux distributions.

So far, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu, and Ubuntu GNOME have confirmed their intentions of providing LTS support, but the first two distros are only going to have it for three years.

LTS stands for long term support and means that the developers will provide security updates for a number of years before the operating system reaches end of life.

The support time for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) is five years and it's scheduled for launch on April 17.
