Canonical, through Adam Conrad, announced a few hours ago, February 20, the immediate availability of the Ubuntu 14.04.2 maintenance release for its current LTS (Long Term Support) operating system, the Trusty Tahr, which includes Xubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, Kubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu GNOME 14.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Kylin 14.04.2 LTS, Edubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, Mythbuntu 14.04.2 LTS, Ubuntu Studio 14.04.2 LTS, and Lubuntu 14.04.2 LTS.

The release introduces a new kernel and graphics stacks from the upstream stable version of the Ubuntu Linux computer operating system, Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn), in order to support new hardware across all the supported CPU architectures, including 64-bit and 32-bit, and keep Ubuntu 14.04 LTS a stable and reliable OS. The Ubuntu Server, Ubuntu Cloud, and Ubuntu Core products have also been updated to version 14.04.2 LTS.

“The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS (Long-Term Support) for its Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products, as well as other flavours of Ubuntu with long-term support. We have expanded our hardware enablement offering since 12.04, and with 14.04.2, this point release contains an updated kernel and X stack for new installations to support new hardware across all our supported architectures, not just x86,” said Adam Conrad.

As expected with any point release, numerous packages have been updated to their latest versions as of February 20, 2015. The ISO images of Xubuntu 14.04 LTS have also been updated, allowing users who want to install Ubuntu 14.04 or any of its derivatives on a new computer to also get the latest updates and a new kernel, of course. Those of you who have Xubuntu 14.04 or Xubuntu 14.04.1 installed don’t need to download the new ISO image, just make sure your installation is up-to-date.

If you’re wondering what packages are part of the Xubuntu 14.04.2 LTS release, we can tell you that we took the distribution for a test drive this morning and learned that it comes with the Mozilla Firefox 35.0.1 web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird 31.4.0 email client, Thunar 1.6.3 file manager, AbiWord 3.0.0 word processor, Pidgin 2.10.9 IM client, gmusicbrowser 1.1.12 music player, Gnumeric 1.12.9 spreadsheet editor, Transmission 2.82 BitTorrent client, GIMP 2.8.10 image editor, and the latest Xfce standard apps.
