Canonical announced today, April 26th, its major upgrade to the Ubuntu operating system, including the Kubuntu 12.04, Xubuntu 12.04 and Lubuntu 12.04 flavors.

Xubuntu 12.04 is an LTS (Long Term Support) release, which means it will be supported for three years.

Dubbed Precise Pangolin, Xubuntu 12.04 LTS is powered by Linux kernel 3.2 and it is distributed as Live CD ISO images (Alternative and Desktop editions) for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.

The Xfce 4.8 based distribution based on Ubuntu 12.04 comes with a few new features, as well as some improvements, new artwork and updated packages.

Simple, elegant, easy to use. Best Ubuntu flavor out there even over the main distribution since they've gone all touchy tablet feely on the desktop with Unity. My only complaint was the OS upgrade was somewhat misleading. It said it was upgrading my Ubuntu and not Xubuntu. At first I thought it was going to put regular Ubuntu on my laptop but that wasn't the case thankfully.

For Xubuntu 12.04 the announced support period is still three years rather than five. Ubuntu and Kubuntu went to five year support, Xubuntu stayed at three and Lubuntu 12.04 is eighteen months.
