Apple has released updates for users of Xsan FileSystem and Xsan Admin. Update 2.1.1 includes general file system fixes, as well as specific fixes where FileSystem is concerned, and fixes for administering, configuring and maintaining Xsan deployments (and more) for the Admin.

Xsan is a powerful and scalable solution for storage consolidation, enabling businesses to reduce data duplication, and more efficiently use and share data in demanding IT data centers, video post-production, and television broadcast workflows. Xsan FileSystem is a high-performance, enterprise-class Storage Area Network (SAN) file system for Mac OS X. The software lets Mac users share one or more RAID devices with multiple servers or workstations, making it easier for first-time users to quickly set up and deploy a SAN. MultiSAN, a feature introduced with the second incarnation of Xsan, allows users on a single workstation to access multiple SANs at the same time, while Xsan 2 is fully integrated with Mac OS X Leopard and Leopard Server. Third-party RAID storage hardware is supported.

On its Support page, Apple reveals that the Xsan 2.1.1 FileSystem Update “is recommended for all systems running Xsan 2,” as it packs general file system fixes, as well as specific fixes for:

• file system performance and reliability;
• Access Control List verification and correction;
• volume reliability during metadata controller failover scenarios;
• upgrading from Xsan 1.4.

As far as Xsan 2.1.1 Admin goes, again, all systems running Xsan 2 should have it. The update delivers general administration fixes for “remotely administering, configuring and maintaining Xsan deployments,” but also some specific corrections, including:

• using SAN Setup Assistant to configure volumes, LUNs and affinities;
• changing a computer between client and metadata controller roles;
• listing computers connected to the SAN;
• visually displaying when LUNs have been truncated.

If, by any chance, you need to uninstall Xsan 2.1.1, Apple's Xsan 2.1 Uninstaller is still good to go. The Xsan 2.1 Uninstaller removes Xsan, the Xsan Admin application, as well as Xsan documentation files. Apple claims that “the Xsan 2.1 Uninstaller is the appropriate version to use when uninstalling Xsan 2.1.1 installations.” The Uninstaller can be obtained here.
