Today, Japanese mobile phone maker Sony Mobile officially confirmed the immediate availability of the Android 4.4 KitKat platform update for the owners of Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, and Xperia Z1 Compact devices, and it also unveiled plans to push the OS upgrade to other devices in its lineup.

To be more precise, the company announced that Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, and Xperia ZR devices would be receiving the KitKat update sometime in the middle of the second quarter of the year.

Basically, this means that the platform upgrade will start reaching these devices starting mid-May, most probably in the second half of the month, at the earliest.

There is a nice range of enhancements included in the platform release that began rolling out today, and most of them should become available for Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, and Xperia ZR users as well.

However, there’s more to it, as Sony is also planning on pushing the update to other handsets in its lineup, such as the newly unveiled Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1, and Xperia M2 mid-range phones.

No specific info on when the update becomes available for these smartphones has been provided as of now, but Sony says it will offer such details shortly, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
