Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has promised a while ago the delivery of a software update for it Xperia X10 devices to enable multi-touch capabilities on the handset, and the update has just started to emerge.

To be more precise, Sony Ericsson already started to deliver the software update to its users in Japan, which marks the beginning of its roll-out to other X10 owners too, hopefully.

For those who are not familiar with the matter, we should note that Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia X10 devices with single-touch capabilities.

The phone was running under Android 1.6 at that time, and many hoped that the Android 2.1 OS upgrade released for the device would bring multi-touch into the mix, but it didn't.

Initially, Sony Ericsson claimed that Xperia X10 does not feature the necessary hardware to support this feature, but announced afterwards that it would deliver a software update to enable it on all units on the market.

Japan seems to be the first country where users enjoy the new capability, though we should note that this is not multi-touch as included in other devices out there.

Although X10 would sport pinch-to-zoom following the update, the feature would be only gesture supported, which means that functionality such as rotation won't work, and that there might be some third-party applications with which it won't work either, Engadget notes in a recent article.

Even so, this is more that nothing, and Xperia X10 owners out there would certainly enjoy the expanded functionality that this update delivers to them.

We already had the chance to take a look at the dual-touch capabilities on Xperia X10. Those who missed the previous report on this should watch the video embedded below to learn more on it.

What remains to be seen is when exactly would Sony Ericsson start releasing the software update to other countries where Xperia X10 is available for purchase, so stay tuned for more info on this.
