Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has just announced the availability of a new software update for its Xperia X10 smartphone users on the airwaves of Telstra in Australia, one that would bring the Android 2.1 OS flavor on their devices. The software update has seen a great deal of delays, but it is now available for Telstra's Xperia X10 users too, after being released on handsets put on sale via other wireless carriers in the country as well.

“Good news, 2.1 is now available with Telstra. Thanks for all your patience guys we know it's been a long time coming,” Sony Ericsson Australia announced on its Facebook page (via ausdroid).

Announced for the first time in early 2010, the Android 2.1 update for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 devices started to land on handsets only in the fourth quarter of the last year, and only on unlocked units at first.

However, Sony Ericsson and its wireless carrier partners already managed to make the software update available for various Xperia X10 devices out there, and now the company delivers it to more users.

The new software update is available for download on Xperia X10 smartphones via Sony Ericsson’s Update Software, and not over the air.

Those Telstra customers owning an Xperia X10 smartphone and interested in downloading and installing the new Android 2.1 update on their devices should install the Sony Ericsson PC Companion 2.0 on their Windows PCs, connect the handset to the PC, fire up the application and follow the instructions.

Also on the company's Facebook page, we noticed that some Xperia X10 users have came up with petition to determine Sony Ericsson work on a new software update for their devices, namely Android 2.2.

“This is a petition group for all Sony Ericsson Xperia users who wish to see a future release of Android 2.2+ on the Xperia series,” one can read on the special Facebook page put up by those enthusiasts here.

Sony Erricsson confirmed officially last week that it won't release a new OS upgrade for its Xperia X10 devices, and that its users would remain with Android 2.1 on their devices from now on.
