Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 can run under Android 2.3 Gingerbread, the same as it is capable of supporting the Android 2.2 Froyo operating system from Google.

Although the mobile phone might never see these platform versions being officially released for it, it can run them, which means that there is a strong possibility that unofficial updates will be released.

Proof of that comes from the emergence of the first Android 2.3 Gingerbread preview ROM for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which can be seen in the video embedded at the bottom of this article.

The preview ROM runs on the existing kernel (2.6.29), and is merely an emulator for Gingerbread, meant to offer us a glimpse at what one might expect from the release.

The preview ROM comes from the guys over at XDA-Developers (via xperiax10.net), and was meant for “those who can't run 2.3 on emulator but still want to see Gingerbread in action.”

According to a post on the XDA-Developers forum, those who would like to install the ROM should do the following: Boot into xRecovery -> install custom zip -> select X10-2.3-preview-signed.zip.

Before that, of course, they would have to download the preview ROM for Xperia X10. Download links are available on the said forum post.

As stated above, is rather uncertain whether Sony Ericsson would come up with a software update to offer Gingerbread for Xperia X10.

The company took about one year since the official launch of Xperia X10 until it upgraded it to Android 2.1, and it might need even longer to release another OS upgrade for the device.

Some of the latest rumors around the Internet suggested that Sony Ericsson might release Android 2.2 for its Xperia X10 handsets, but nothing was confirmed on this either.

The guys over at XDA-Developers are working on delivering an unofficial Froyo ROM for Xperia X10. Until more info on this emerges, have a look at the video below to see Android 2.3 on Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10.
