Sony has just made available for download in the Android Market a new application for all NFC-enabled devices to benefit from, namely Xperia SmartTags.

Originally designed only for the company’s Xperia phones, the easy-to-use application will connect with / manage NFC SmartTags.

These Xperia SmartTags were meant to be available when the Xperia S smartphone arrived on shelves next month, yet it appears that other handsets will also be capable to connect with them.

The app can be downloaded on any NFC-enabled device that runs under Google’s Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread or newer operating system flavors.

Through it, users will be able to set their devices to trigger specific actions when they touch NFC SmartTags.

“You can trigger many things at once to start the exact behaviors you want on your NFC phone by reading Xperia SmartTags,” Sony explains.

“For example, when you nudge a tag embedded with Bedroom scenario with your phone, the sound, Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi will be turned off at once. SmartTags have ready-to-use profiles each with a pre-defined set of actions. Profiles include Home, Car and Bedroom.”

The mobile application also comes with an Xperia SmartTags widget that can be placed on the phone’s homescreen for fast access.

“To get the most out of the application we encourage you to activate the Xperia SmartTags widget on your desktop,” Sony notes.

The mobile application weighs only 666k and is available for download for free. As stated above, users need to have an NFC-capable smartphone in their hands.
