Sony Xperia S was launched in Canada last month, but the Japanese company did not follow the traditional retail channels. The phone wasn’t picked by any Canadian carriers, but customers who purchase the Xperia S are required to activate it on Rogers’ network.

Moreover, the handset was only available for a short time in limited quantities at official Sony Store locations. Customers who didn’t have the chance to purchase an Xperia S device last month will be able to get one starting today.

Sony Canada has just made the smartphone available on its online store, though the Xperia S still requires customers to activate it on Rogers’ network.

The Xperia S can be purchased for $499.99 CAD off-contract. Given the fact that the smartphone hasn’t been picked by a carrier, there are no other pricing options for the moment.

Sony’s decision to offer the Xperia S only through its store locations is weird, to say the least. It appears that the Japanese company wasn’t able to bring a high number of Xperia S units in Canada, which is why it preferred to sell it through brick and mortar stores.

All in all, the Xperia S is still Sony’s Android flagship smartphone, though the company is expected to replace it by the end of the year.

The device is shipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board, but Xperia S has been confirmed for an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in Q2 2012. However, Sony has yet to reveal a release schedule for the update.

The handset is equipped with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and packs an Adreno 220 GPU, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory.

The Xperia S boasts a hyper-vibrant 4.3-inch Sony Mobile Reality BRAVIA display that supports HD (720 x 1280 pixels) resolution, and features scratch-resistant glass.
