Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson has been long rumored to plan the launch of a so called PlayStation Phone, and the device emerged once again into the wild, ahead of its possible launch at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

The mobile phone is expected to hit the market under the name of Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, while being powered by Google's Android operating system.

With a 4-inch LCD display that would boast a 854 x 480 pixels resolution and multi-touch capabilities, the device should prove quite appealing when made available for purchase, especially since it would also include advanced gaming capabilities.

The phone includes a 1GHz application processor from Qualcomm, complemented by an Adreno 205 GPU and 512MB of RAM, which should provide increased performance levels.

According to the guys over at Engadget, who had the chance to play a little with the device, it would be capable of scoring high in benchmarking tests.

They also note that, the mobile phone managed to score 1,689 on Quadrant and 59fps on Neocore, as well as 35 MFLOPS on Linpack, and around 43fps on NenaMark

The handset previewed had some issues with the WiFi connectivity, but it might have been all caused by a faulty driver, or by the fact that the device was not final hardware.

All in all, the handset is reportedly very appealing, and the D-pad it comes with (with PlayStation-like buttons) reportedly works very well.

The mobile phone's gaming capabilities are worth mentioning too, it seems, and the second video embedded at the bottom of this article should offer some more info on the matter.

The other two videos that Engadget came up with would offer a glimpse at the handset's hardware, along with camera sample, to make an idea of what would Sony Ericsson have in store for us for MWC 2011.

The phone runs under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system flavor, and might include Sony Ericsson's own interface when launched.

What still hasn't been unveiled, though it might not be too long before specific info emerge on the matter, would be the exact release date and the pricing the upcoming Xperia Play would sport.
