During the CommunicAsia 2011 conference in Singapore, Japanese-Swedish mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson announced the upcoming availability of its Xperia PLAY smartphone in a number of three more markets in the Asia-Pacific region during the third quarter of the ongoing year.

The announcement was made in conjunction with the unveiling of new Android-based Xperia devices, the Xperia ray and Xperia active, both expected to arrive on shelves in Q3 at affordable price tags.

The Xperia PLAY was already made available for purchase in a series of markets in Asia, including Australia, India and Singapore, and should arrive in more of them later this year.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand will receive the Android-based gaming powerhouse in the third quarter of 2011, Sony Ericsson announced.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates that we continue to deliver a portfolio to make the Sony Ericsson experience available to a broad range of consumers,” said Steve Walker, Chief Marketing Officer, Sony Ericsson.

“As the Android platform gains market share in Asia Pacific, the Xperia portfolio is well positioned to deliver consumers a unique and differentiated experience.”

Xperia PLAY was launched in February with Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system on board, with a large 4-inch touchscreen display and a sliding gamepad that sports the usual PLayStation controls hidden beneath it.

The mobile phone arrived on shelves with a series of exclusive mobile games. The number of titles available for the device already grew to over 100, being aimed at fulfilling the needs of all types of gamers.

Some of the latest titles launched for the mobile phone would include Minecraft, or the Tom Clancy’s Rainbow 6 Shadow Vanguard coming from Gameloft.

Xperia PLAY packs a fast 1GHz application processor, a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage space, a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in GPS receiver, and support for various services and applications.
