Sony Ericsson is moving forth with the development of an official Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia 2011 lineup, but it will have it available only next year for users.

In the meantime, however, unofficial ROMs can be downloaded and installed on devices. Xperia PLAY is the latest handset from the company to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich via unofficial software.

This new ‘Ice Cream Xperia’ (ICX) ROM was made available as version alpha2 and is still work in progress, which means that there are a lot of aspects that do not work at the moment.

However, things reportedly look encouraging, the new ROM brings the stock ICS launcher and an overclock for the application processor, along with a file manager.

Features like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth still need attention, yet they are expected to get fixed soon. The ROM is now available via XDA-Developers. Keep in mind that it is only an alpha release.
