Wireless services provider AT&T has just announced that it planned on making a new Android-based mobile phone available for purchase on its airwaves in the near future, namely the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY, a smartphone brought to the market in the US on the airwaves of Verizon Wireless only recently.

To be more precise, the wireless carrier has made the announcement without fanfare, and was mum on any specific details regarding the release.

During a recent event in New York City, the company unveiled plans to make the Sony Ericsson handset available for purchase at a later date.

Following the release of HTC Status, the Xperia PLAY would become the second smartphone on AT&T's airwaves to run under Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

Moreover, it seems that the wireless carrier is set to make the new device available on its airwaves with support for 21MBps-capable HSPA+, which means fast data transfer speeds for all users.

Since the smartphone lands on shelves as a gaming powerhouse, fast data connectivity is certainly needed to ensure access to the latest games available for Android users.

One other thing that should be noted about AT&T's upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY is the fact that is should be launched in a “Stealth Blue” color option, along with the black flavor that was already spotted into the wild.

Apparently, the handset will arrive on shelves with the same specifications as the original Xperia PLAY, including the 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon application processor, and the sliding form factor.

The smartphone packs a 4-inch (854 x 480 pixel) display, a gamepad with the usual PlayStation controls, a 5MP camera on the back, microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, built-in GPS receiver, and more.

For the time being, no info on the release date or pricing of this device emerged, but AT&T might make this info available in the near future, so stay tuned to learn more on the matter.
