Sony Mobile has yet to announce any upgrading plans for the Xperia M mid-range smartphone. For the time being, the device is still stuck on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but not for long hopefully.

Although there have been some rumors that the Xperia M might indeed be on track for an official Android 4.3 Jelly Bean upgrade in the not-so-distant future, Sony did not put the device on the same list with the first wave of smartphones to receive the update.

However, the good folks at XDA Developers have been working hard on a functional Android 4.4.2 KitKat build for the Sony Xperia M and their efforts seem to have been fruitful.

Thanks to XDA Senior Member PecanCM ,there’s a stable Android 4.4.2 KitKat build available for download to those who know how to flash a custom ROM.

Obviously, there are still some minor bugs that need to be addressed in future updates, but those who want KitKat on their Xperia M devices can flash this build and have no problems use it on a daily basis.

It is also worth mentioning that this Android 4.4.2 KitKat ROM is based on an unofficial CyanogenMod 11 build, which is likely to get some updates in the future.

As with all custom ROMs, there are things that work and some that don’t. Here are all the features that have been confirmed to fully or partially work on this KitKat build:

- The RIL (ie. calls, SMS, mobile data); - Display; - Camera, video, panorama; - Audio and video playback; - Audio recording; - Wi-Fi & Wi-Fi tethering; - Bluetooth & Bluetooth tethering; - OpenGL rendering; - Hardware video decoding & encoding; - Sensors (ie. accelerometer, compass, light, proximity); - SD card; - Auto brightness; - Notification LED; - NFC (Near Filed Communication) and GPS.
