A few days ago, Sony Ericsson started the delivery of a new software update for the Xperia devices that landed on shelves during the ongoing year, providing users with the newer Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread platform release, as well as with a series of other enhancements and new features.

The mobile phone maker has just detailed one of these features, namely Gesture input, which is expected to provide Xperia owners with the ability to write messages much easier than before.

“I absolutely love the feature of Gesture input on the 2.3.4. Gingerbread update on our Xperia phones,” Cristina Porter notes on Sony Ericsson's blog.

Through this feature, users will be able to easily write messages on their devices, chat with friends, or even compose emails. The technology relies on text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next.

“This feature makes writing on your Xperia so easy, fast and comfortable: you can write words just sweeping your finger from one letter to the other, without lifting your finger from letter to letter, and you can even enable automatic spacing,” she continues.

This means that “chatting and sending SMS and Twitter messages becomes really fast. Also, Gesture input supports all the languages of the international keyboard, so changing between languages is really simple.”

Those who would like to learn a few more info on what Gesture Input on Sony Ericsson's handsets is all about should have a look at the video embedded below, which comes straight from the Sony Ericsson's Developer World.

As stated above, this is only one of the new features that Xperia devices are bound to receive soon, and is part of the Android 2.3.4 OS upgrade that is currently rolling out to them.

We should also note that Xperia devices are not the only smartphones to enable users to write texts without lifting their fingers from the screen, since software like Swype enabled the feature on other devices as well.
