14 DAY TRIAL // Xonotic is a free and fast-paced first-person shooter for multiple platforms, including Linux, developed by a team of people from all over the globe. The latest version is now 0.8 and it gathers a large number of improvements.
The free arena multiplayer games for Linux are not what they used to be. There was a time when Linux users had access to a ton of free FPS games and the competition between the projects was fierce. Those projects died slowly or they have been transformed into something else. With the Steam on the rise and with so many free games already available, there is no place for open source FPS titles like this one.
The developers who make Xonotic have decided to show the Linux gamers that's not the case. The previous update was made available back in June, 2013, so users were starting to believe that no new updates will be made and that the game was dead and buried.
Xonotic 0.8 is a massive release
The developers have made so many new changes and improvements that it's even difficult to list them all. They range from "simple" stuff like new maps, to upgrades to the game engine and various other components.
"This version is the culmination of months of effort from many individuals from across the globe. It contains improvements in just about all visible aspects of the game and onto the web. There are new menu screens, gameplay features, and a much-anticipated new weapon: the Arc! We’re excited for the what the future holds, and we hope to see you out on the servers soon," is noted on the official website.
The makers of the game explain that three new maps have been implemented, a game type vote screen has been implemented, the physics and weapon balance have both been tweaked, and a new mod has been implemented to allow users to cooperate against monsters.
