Today is a special day for up-and-rising Chinese device maker Xiaomi, as the company is celebrating five years of existence. And in order to mark the date, the phone maker has launched a new model that offers LTE connectivity on the cheap.

We have been hearing whispers about Xiaomi rolling out a super affordable phone for some time now, although recently the company’s CEO stepped forward and denied such claims.

Well, it appears that his statement was all a big plot to keep the new budget-friendly Xiaomi phone hidden for as long as possible.

Today, we get to take a look at the new device which arrives in the wild as the Redmi 2A. As its name suggests, the handset is actually a toned-down variation of the Redmi 2 model that launched a while ago.

The phone will go on sale for $96 / €89, which means it is an extremely affordable device. Therefore, we shouldn’t be expecting any stellar specs from it. However, less-demanding users will find the phone very well suited.

The phone arrives with a 4.7-inch display with 720p resolution and draws power from a 1.5GHz quad-core Leadcore L1860C chipset (and Mali T628MP2 GPU on the inside) fitted with 1GB of RAM.

Xiaomi’s new Redmi 2A is also equipped with an 8MP/2MP camera combo, a 2,200mAh battery and two SIM card slots.

What’s pretty impressive is that the phone also offers LTE capabilities, making it one of the most affordable 4G phones on the market today.

Also worth noting is that the phone comes with fast-charging, so in case your battery dies, you’ll be able to pump in some juice back in no time.

Xiaomi will be offering the phone at a promotional price soon

The Xiaomi Redmi 2A will be made available for purchase for $96 / €89, but if you’re quick enough, the company will have a promotion on April 8 which will offer the phone for just $80 / €74. Stocks will probably run out very fast, so you’d better be fast if you want to pick up the phone at the promotional price.

Sadly, Xiaomi will probably market the phone only in Asia and related territories. But third-party oversees resellers might also offer the phone at some point.
