Xiaomi, the popular Chinese mobile phone maker, is reportedly considering the building of a modular phone system, similar to the one Motorola is working on as part of its “Project Ara.”

For those out of the loop, we should note that the project would allow users to easily build or upgrade their smartphones through easy to connect hardware.

Recently, Motorola said that it was almost ready to deploy the system, yet it seems that Xiaomi is also interested in the matter, CEO Lei Jun confirmed on Weibo, GizChina reports.

The Chinese vendor did not offer further details on the matter, and there’s no telling on whether it will indeed manage to launch such an initiative.

However, it’s still interesting to see that more companies are considering this approach to smartphone upgrades. Stay tuned for more on the matter.
