Chinese mobile phone maker Xiaomi is getting ready for the launch of its affordable Xiaomi Hongmi (Red Rice) smartphone on the market in Taiwan, and has already officially unveiled plans on the matter.

The smartphone is set to be released in Taiwan as soon as December 9, and will feature a price tag of NT$3,999 ($135/€99), the company has announced.

Furthermore, the handset vendor has already kicked off reservations for the smartphone, as AndroidOS notes. Those interested in learning more on the matter should head over to Xiaomi’s Facebook page for that.

In case you missed previous reports on the Xiaomi Hongmi smartphone, you should know that the device was made official back in summer, and that it landed on shelves in China in August.

The phone has already managed to prove highly popular among mobile phone users in this country, and initial stock was sold within seconds after the phone was put up for sale.

Xiaomi Hongmi arrives on shelves with a 4.7-inch IPS touchscreen display, capable of delivering a 720p resolution at 312ppi pixel density. Furthermore, it is protected by Gorilla Glass 2 technology.

At the same time, the mobile phone packs a 1.5GHz Mediatek MT6589 Cortex-A7 processor inside, paired with PowerVR SGX544 GPU and 1GB of RAM.

It also includes 4GB of internal memory, as well as a microSD memory card slot to allow users to add some more storage space to it.

On the back, the Xiaomi Hongmi features an 8-megapixel camera with BSI sensor, complemented by a 1.3MP front camera for video calling. It also comes with the usual set of sensors and connectivity capabilities.

The smartphone is powered by a 2000 mAh battery and runs under the MIUI v5 software from Xiaomi, which is based on Google’s Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

The release of Hongmi in Taiwan is only the first step that Xiaomi makes towards bringing its smartphones to more markets out there.
