Xiaomi, rumored to be entering the action cam business

Even if Xiaomi started out by making smartphones, the Chinese company soon extended its grasp on the tech market by putting out a slew of other products including tablets, routers and smartbands.

But back in November a report came in saying that the device maker might be looking to make a gracious debut into a new field – that of action cameras.

Rumors whispered that Xiaomi will soon introduce a GoPro-style camera which we dubbed the Mi Camera.

We were even given a few specs to chew upon, as the information claimed the shooter will arrive with a 138-degree wide-angle lens and will be able to shoot 4K at 30fps or 1080p at 120fps.

We haven’t heard anything else of Xiaomi’s efforts to breach into the action camera business, but we assumed the company was busy with the launch of its latest smartphones, the Mi Note and Mi Note Pro.

Xiaomi just teased a small, mystery device

Well it seems Xiaomi will soon be unveiling a new shooter soon. The device manufacturer has posted two teaser images on Weibo that depict only a matchbox of some sort. The second image shows an opened matchbox that reveals packed luggage and a snorkel mask.

We’re not given any further details about the product, but we’re told we’re bound to find out more on March 2.

Our guess is that Xiaomi is finally getting ready to unveil the GoPro competitor we were talking about a few months ago.

Action cameras are usually quite small and compact. Just remember how the tiny the HTC RE camera was (the one that looked like a periscope).

The presence of the snorkel mask in the teaser images pinpoints to the fact that the camera will be waterproof (like the RE camera) which means users will be able to use it to record their glory moments even while they are surfing.

GoPro-style cameras have become quite popular all across the globe, so it’s no wonder Xiaomi is trying to get into the game as well, seeing as it is very profitable.

According to previous rumors, the purported Xiaomi Mi Camera is most likely to cost around $163 / €130. Keep checking back with us on March 2 to see if Xiaomi launches the GoPro-style camera of your dreams.
