Xentex is hoping to raise enough money to produce this atypical prototype

We have heard a lot about convertibles lately. They are versatile machines to be used both in tablet mode and laptop mode. Sometimes a third mode is added, like in the case of the ASUS Transformer Book Trio that has the additional desktop mode.

But the Xentex Flip-Pad is a bit more special than your average hybrid model. This device is actually a dual-screen laptop with displays capable of pivoting. The device is still in its prototype stages, but Xentex CEO Jeff Batio has big plans for the convertible.

The device will supposedly be released with two 7-inch displays each sporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. When the two screens come together, they will produce a total of 12-inch screen size.

In notebook mode, the two screens with join together to share a full-sized keyboard. If users prefer, one screen can be flipped around to face the opposite direction, so two or more people can use the convertible at the same time.

If users feel like taking the device to bed, they can rotate the screen and fold the keyboard and enjoy a tablet experience. Now listen to this, if you detach the right screen (Slingshot) from the base, you’ll be getting a usable smartphone. This is a very atypical feature, and could prove to be the main attraction here.

CPU and GPU options haven’t been made available yet, but we can tell you some things in terms of operating system we’re going to see onboard. It appears that the device will run either Windows 8 or Ubuntu, while Slingshot will be powered by Android.

The Slingshot and the base will have separate batteries, with the first being powered by a 3,000 mAh battery, while the latter should provide 18 hours of life. Both parts will sport 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

Batio has currently launched a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo that will hopefully bring the project into reality. Those looking to contribute should know the Ubuntu/Android model is priced at $649 / €479, while the Windows/Android one is available for $799 / €590. If you want your Windows/Android model to be customized (choose finish, carry case and protective cover), you'll have to pay a little extra, meaning $1,299 / €959.
