A new preview of Xcode 4 is now available, delivering iOS 4.1 compatibility and a few new features, including a new activity interface, and a completely refreshed UI for the code completion technologies.

“Xcode is the complete toolset for building Mac OS X and iOS applications - and with Xcode 4, the tools have been redesigned to be faster, easier to use, and more helpful than ever before,” Apple says on its web site.

“The Xcode IDE understands your project’s every detail, identifies mistakes in both syntax and logic, and will even fix your code for you. Quite simply, Xcode 4 will help you write better code,” the company notes.

“Xcode 4 has a brand new user interface, built upon proven technologies that Apple itself uses to build Mac OS X and iOS, and that have produced over a quarter million Mac OS X and iOS apps,” Apple explains.

Xcode 4 developer preview 3 is a pre-release version of Xcode 4, a major new release for both Mac OS X and iOS development, Apple says.

This release requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

It also includes the iOS SDK 4.1 GM seed issued two days ago, targeting development for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, Apple says.

Developers are encouraged to review the release notes and readme accompanying the build, prior to installing it on their computers.

iOS Developer Program members can log in to the iPhone Dev Center, now dubbed iOS Dev Center, and download iOS 4.1 GM seed and iOS SDK 4.1 GM seed, Apple announced on September 1.

Apple wants devs to learn everything they need to know about developing apps for Game Center, starting now.

iOS 4.1, scheduled to ship on September 8, includes support for Apple’s social gaming network.

“Game Center is Apple's new social gaming network that allows your users to invite friends to play a game, start a multiplayer game through auto-matching, track their achievements, and compare their best scores on a leaderboard,” Cupertino explains.
