Owners of Windows Phone smartphones will soon be able to enjoy a dedicated Xbox Video application, a recent post on Microsoft’s portal for the service unveils.

The mobile client will provide users with the ability to download and watch movies and TV shows straight on their handsets, as WMPoweruser notes.

Unfortunately, there will be no support for HD video playback, at least not in the beginning, it seems. The application will support only SD resolution videos (around 640 x 480 pixels).

Given that Windows Phone 8 smartphones that pack higher resolution screens are already available on the market, chances are that Microsoft will include support for HD or higher res video playback in the application in the not too distant future.

No specific info on when the Windows Phone mobile client will be released has been provided as of now, but TechRadar notes that it should arrive shortly. Stay tuned for more on this.
