Larry Hryb, aka Major Nelson, the leading community liaison at Microsoft, believes that the NPD Group results for December 2013 show that both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 can be long term successes.

At the same time solid sales are a benefit for the wider gaming industry.

The Microsoft representative states on Reddit that, "We all should be celebrating a healthy vibrant industry. Sony has done a good job, and they should be commended. The hate that infects gaming in the online space needs to go away."

The Xbox One managed to sell better than the PlayStation 4 during December in the United States but Sony says its own device remains the leader of the next generation of consoles and that every device that's available is being sold.

Fans on each side tend to treat every sales report as an argument that their platform is superior but the two companies have often said that competition and choice are good for the industry overall.
