Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One next-gen console can't even be used to play games or applications without the day-one software update that's been revealed some time ago.

The Xbox One was initially set to feature a variety of restrictions and limitations imposed on games and entertainment but, due to feedback from the community, Microsoft decided to eliminate them, confirming that a day-one update would be released on November 22, alongside the console, to facilitate this.

Sadly, it seems that the update is mandatory, as owners of the next-gen console won't even be able to play games or enjoy entertainment applications without it.

This was confirmed by Microsoft's Albert Penello to Engadget, who said that "Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update. You're going to need to take this update. It's not going to be really an optional thing."

As such, future Xbox one owners should make sure that they have an active Internet connection in order to properly update the console's firmware.
