Don Mattrick, the leader of interactive entertainment development at Microsoft, says that the recently revealed Xbox One home console will have a specific program for independent developers designed to give them the resources to create innovative titles for the new device.

The executive tells Kotaku that, "We’re going to sponsor it. We’re going to give people tools."

He adds, "That’s how I started in the industry. There’s no way we’re going to build a box that doesn’t support that."

The executive says that more information on the indie program for the Xbox One will be offered in the near future.

A number of indie developers were critical of Microsoft for its choice to keep the Xbox 360 policy of not allowing studios to self-publish their titles.

The Xbox One will be launched before the end of 2013.
