The team at Microsoft in charge of the Xbox One announces that the dedicated Twitch streaming application for the device is getting a major update, which is designed to introduce new broadcast filtering techniques that will make it easier for users to find content that they are interested in watching.

The official announcement on the Larry Hryb official Major Nelson blog states that "The app now uses Xbox Live’s new ability to associate real-time gameplay stats with broadcasts, which enables a massive array of search options. Depending on the game, the filters may include player stats, game modes, maps, player skill level, in-game activity, progress, and more."

Microsoft says gamers will be able to search the Twitch streams for a variety of games using an array of potential options, like highest kill/death ratio in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, specific cars in Forza Horizon 2 and more.

The update for the app is also introducing Video on Demand for the first time on home consoles and the Home screen has been changed to offer more personalization options for users.

Annie Berrones, director of product marketing at Twitch, states, "With this impressive set of updates, including the ability to now follow the games you want, view archived videos and have access to more advanced directories, video game streaming and spectating as part of the home entertainment experience is only going to get stronger."

The improvements coming to Twitch can be seen in the attached video.

Xbox One relies on apps to attract some customers

The Xbox One is mainly a gaming machine but since it was first announced, Microsoft has talked a lot about the kinds of entertainment experiences that gamers can get via the newly introduced apps.

Twitch is very popular as a streaming tool and there are plenty of channels which attract a very big audience.

The Xbox One application means that users do not need to switch to another device in order to get their video fix.

In the long term, Microsoft might be thinking about expanding the integration in new ways in order to try and make its own device more attractive than the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

At the moment, Twitch is dominating the streaming segment for video games although in the future its position might be threatened by new initiatives, like the Broadcasting service for Steam which Valve has introduced in beta form and plans to expand in 2015.
