Phil Spencer, a senior executive at Microsoft in charge of the Xbox One, says that many new home consoles were turned on for the first time over the Christmas period and more activity than ever was linked to the new device.

He writes on his official Twitter account that, “Watching post-xmas XBOX One status, a lot of boxes turned on for the first time in the last 2 days. Status == good. Welcome new XB1 gamers.”

The Xbox One was launched in 13 core territories on November 22 for the price of 499 dollars or Euro.

The rest of the world is set to get access to the hardware at some point in early 2014.

Both Microsoft and its main rival Sony are hoping that their devices will be the ones to register the biggest sales over the crucial Christmas shopping season.

Official sales numbers are expected to be announced early in 2014.
