Microsoft has revealed that Xbox Live users have set a brand new world record for the largest simultaneous online 100-meter sprint, achieved with the help of the Kinect Sports title.

Over Easter weekend, Microsoft held a very special event, in the form of the Xbox Nations one, which not only offered European Xbox Live users free access to the paid Gold membership, but also a special world record attempt in Kinect Sports.

The event called for gamers from all around the world to boot up their copy of Kinect Sports, which is bundled with every Kinect device, and start up the 100-meter sprint event in the athletics game.

On Saturday, April 23, the world record attempt took place and Microsoft is now pleased to report, that it was a great success.

Stephen McGill, director of Xbox and Entertainment for Microsoft’s Retail Sales and Marketing Division, UK & Ireland said, “We’re thrilled to hold a Guinness World Record title for the largest online 100 metre sprint! Breaking a Guinness World Record is such a massive milestone and we’re pleased that we had the chance to do this in partnership with the Xbox LIVE community, following our record breaking launch of Kinect, which was named the Fastest Selling Consumer Electronics Device by Guinness as well.”

According to the Guinness World Book or Records, the attempt gathered 10,539 participants, who all ran the same 100-meter dash using Kinect Sports at the same time all around the world.

Microsoft went to great efforts in order to raise awareness for the event, holding a special Kinect Sports Superstars gathering in London.

There, famous British sports stars like Cricketer Graeme Swann, Winter Olympics Gold medalist Amy Williams, Olympic medalist in gymnastics Louis Smith and the “Lewis Hamilton of table tennis” Darius Knight all ran the 100 meter sprint in the game.

All those who participated in the virtual event have received T-shirts for their Xbox Live avatar, commemorating the role they had in the new world record.
