Microsoft announces that the Xbox Live Gold service for its home consoles is set to go free-to-play during the coming weekend, starting at 12 AM Greenwich Mean Time on Friday, March 8 and ending at 23:59 PM on Sunday, March 10.

All the services that usually require a subscription, including online multiplayer for all the titles on the Xbox 360, will be free during the period.

Microsoft is also planning a number of special events for the occasion, involving video games like Halo 4, Far Cry 3, Assassin’s Creed 3, Borderlands 2, Tomb Raider, Forza Horizon and the Ultimate Team mode for FIFA 13.

More details are available on the official page for the free weekend.

Microsoft is widely expected to announce the Xbox 720 during late April to counter the recent reveal of the Sony made PlayStation 4.
