Microsoft is holding a very special event this weekend, as not only will Xbox Live European users get a free weekend with Gold privileges, but the company is also hosting a global world record attempt for the largest online 100-meter sprint, through Kinect Sports.

Microsoft is definitely hungry for more world records, especially since its Kinect motion detection sensor has recently earned the world's fastest-selling electronics device award from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Now, the company has just announced that, alongside a free Xbox Live Gold weekend for European Xbox 360 owners, during which they'll be able to experience all of the perks of being an Xbox Live Gold member for free, it's also hosting the special Xbox Nations event.

During Xbox Nations, on Saturday, April 23, Microsoft is unlocking multiplayer access for all copies of Kinect Sports, no matter the Xbox Live membership of the user, so that everyone can participate in a world record attempt for the largest online 100-meter sprint.

Using Kinect Sports, players from all around the world must log into their Xbox Live accounts, start up the game at 1pm ET (10am PT, 6pm GMT) and start up the 100 meter dash event from its wide array of athletic activities.

Besides knowing that they took part in such a global endeavor, players who participate will get "an exclusive Xbox and Guinness World Record Avatar t-shirt"

While the idea of such a record may be a bit out of the ordinary, it's definitely a fun activity that will no doubt get even more people interested in the Kinect motion sensor and its various games, including Kinect Sports.

Also, Xbox Live European users will definitely enjoy this free Gold weekend, especially if they planned to celebrate Easter weekend at home, with the family and the Xbox 360.
