The Xbox Live is one of the essential elements of the Xbox One and Xbox 360 ecosystem, and any threat linked to it tends to be taken very seriously by both platform holder Microsoft and the gamers who are using the two devices.

The service was down earlier during the day, with some social functions inaccessible for hours, although the official site now shows that everything is running smoothly.

Over on Reddit, a number of users have said that they were unable to connect to their accounts and had to wait for hours in order to get even basic functionality up and running.

Now though, only a small group is still reporting problems with their Xbox One and 360 devices, although it seems that all of those affected are located in either North America or Canada.

Microsoft has not commented on the Xbox Live downtime and has not said whether an outside group attacked the service.

At least one hacker group is trying to claim responsibility for the incident and says that more attacks that use Denial of Service methods will be launched over the holiday period in order to try and bring the infrastructure down and affect as many users as possible.

It is unclear what the motivation behind such actions might be and whether any other gaming-related services might also be targeted in the future.

If any user data was affected by the recent potential attacks, Microsoft will offer more details and will explain how those affected need to act, but at the moment the problem seems to be relatively small.

Xbox Live and PSN are becoming ever more important for modern gamers

At the moment, the Xbox Live service, especially the paid Gold monthly subscription, is becoming essential for those who want to explore everything that the Xbox One has to offer.

Microsoft needs to make sure that downtime is as small as possible in the long term and that no hackers gain access to sensitive information as any breach can adversely affect customer sentiment.

Currently, the Xbox One is behind in terms of overall sales in its competition with the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

Microsoft is trying very hard to make its platform competitive and has implemented a price cut in the United States, which is set to last until early in 2015, while also introducing a wide range of bundles that will be attractive for buyers as Christmas draws near.
