A brand new report has appeared on the web, this time revealing that games for the upcoming Xbox 720 (aka the next Xbox console) will require online activation, just like current-day PC titles, in order to eliminate the used games issue that is affecting developers, publishers, and even platform manufacturers like Microsoft itself.

Next-generation consoles are expected to be revealed to the world this year, as Sony is counting down to a big announcement on February 20, while Microsoft is teasing a special reveal that's going to take place at E3 2013 this summer.

Now, after hearing plenty of rumors about both devices, Edge has cited inside sources that claim the Xbox 720 games will require owners of the new console to activate their copies online by introducing a special code, just like how PC gamers are required to do with their own titles.

Apparently, Microsoft wants to make the Xbox Live online service an integral and mandatory part of the next console so all games will be tied to the accounts of the device's owners.

According to the report, Microsoft is willing to drive away customers without permanent online connections with this requirement, as it believes there are in the minority nowadays.

seems like it could bring some other options to the table, if i cant buy used or probably even rent a copy theyll prob introduce some kind of on console rental service( oh wait they already announced Red Box) so i can rent my games from my console without even leaving home, and if theyre not manufacturing as many physical copies i would expect those prices to be generously low! im just saying

How can "the used games issue that is affecting developers" be taken serious for an industry making billions of dollars profit. Brand new games are way too expensive. I do not expect that brand new games will be lowered in price as result of this online activation scheme. The game industry is way too much infected with greed for that to happen. Proof for that is the fact that 90 percent of all games are such bad quality they aren't even worth the second hand price. Many shady developers think if they buy some game engine and add to that a crappy story they are entitled to make hundreds of millions dollars profit. Your money for nothing and your chicks for free. A bold and unwise move in my humble "non-gamer" opinion. Sony will gladly take this minority off their hands.

Sony is rumored to be doing the exact same thing with their console. This push is coming from EA and Acti.
To me this is all good news, because I never buy used or trade in games. So this "should" mean that prices of games will not be s stagnant $60 and may take the Steam approach to game prices and discounts.
And if they don't this will just push people to PC gaming as Steam DOES offer those things. And that is also a good thing.

If I can't rent a game, odds are I won't buy it. Some, sure I know I want enough to buy without playing first, but even Skyrim I wasn't 100% sure I wanted to buy it until I rented it. So, this will pretty much mean no Xbox 720 for me.
