Bill Gates' statement that Microsoft is studying the possibility of adopting the HD-DVD for its Xbox 360 is surely very flattering for Toshiba, but in the same time it could jeopardize the gaming console's sales.
The new console from Microsoft, awaited by the gamers with more interest than the winter holidays (when the launch date is set), could experience a sales fiasco if the fans decide to wait for the HD-DVD model.
The HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats have been thoroughly examined, but little is yet known regarding the unit's or disc's pricing, either from Sony or Toshiba.
At this time, it's hard to tell just how much an Xbox 360 will cost, Microsoft suggesting a price of around $300. However, the price for the HD-DVD model is absolutely impossible to be predicted.
The battle between the two formats is far from over, and it's not yet known whether the users will go for one format or the other. Nevertheless, at this time, most future customers are hoping for a unified optical format.
What's quite clear is that the first Xbox 360 units to hit the stores won't be fitted with a HD-DVD unit, and at a later time Microsoft could lose some millions in order to honor its promise to Toshiba. Perhaps it should have waited for the war to be over, before choosing sides.
