Things are looking better and better for Microsoft in the entertainment and gaming department, as, after the relatively smooth launch of the
New Xbox Experience, the Xbox 360 is looking better and better in the eyes of the regular customers who want to buy a console this holiday season.
Now, news has surfaced that the company's console has reached a worldwide install base of over 25 million and has surpassed the original Xbox, which barely
reached this figure. This is definitely good news as the company really wants to market this achievement and says that the number of users will keep on growing, citing the fact that the low price of the console and the big number of great games available will surely attract users who haven't bought a console yet.
Microsoft’s VP of interactive entertainment, Chris Lewis, has commented on the fact that the Xbox 360 has now beaten its predecessor: "We’ve already surpassed the installed base of the original Xbox – which is a really significant milestone. We’ve been blown away by the appetite of people to consumer digital entertainment experiences."
Mindy Mount, Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division corporate VP, went on to elaborate the statement, saying that the low price of the console, as opposed to its rivals, would guarantee big sales during and after this holiday season. "It's a great milestone for us, but it's still only a start, when you consider that history shows that more than three-fourths of a console's sales come at a price of $199 or lower."
It's definitely true that the hefty price cuts that Microsoft made have resulted in a boost in sales figures, but the number of units moved still needs to grow, if the company wants to make a considerable profit. The fact that both Sony and
Nintendo stated that no price cuts would be employed this holiday season has also made customers more interested in the Xbox 360.
All that's left for us to see are the sales figures at the end of the holidays and then we can declare a winner in this very tough season.
