Microsoft is going to deploy a big update for its Xbox 360 console's software in the near future, which brings a new option in its settings menu, to turn on the 3D mode of the device, allowing games that support such a technology to use it.
While Sony has been hyping up the 3D capabilities of its PlayStation 3 for quite some time, Microsoft has been content with not getting involved in this area of gaming, although games that support the technology, like Call of Duty: Black Ops, have been released on its Xbox 360 console.
Now, with more and more titles using stereoscopic 3D that will arrive on the device, including exclusives like
Gears of War 3 or
Halo: Anniversary, it seems that Microsoft is pretty much forced to embrace the technology.
The first step, according to a report from
msxbox-world, will be an update for the console's software, which adds a new 3D option in its Settings menu, as revealed by the image above.
The description of the option says: "Enable 3D to use stereoscopic 3D in games and experiences that support it."
While there are already games that will benefit from this option, including the ones mentioned above, it's worth noting that the description also mentions experiences, so perhaps Microsoft is planning to release other applications or services for the Xbox 360 that will take advantage of stereoscopic 3D.
As of yet, however, the North American company hasn't commented on the report. Instead, it's busy hyping up the new Xbox 360 dashboard update that will arrive later this year, complete with a new user interface, more Kinect friendly but still easy to navigate with a regular console controller.
Expect more details about the official update, as well as this reported 3D one in the near future.
