The well-known retailer Target has attached a price of 299.99 dollars to the Xbox 360 home gaming console on its official Video Game section of its online store, suggesting that the Microsoft-made platform might be preparing for a price cut at the upcoming E3 trade show.

At the moment the 250 GB hard drive version of the Xbox 360 complete with the Kinect motion tracking system is officially priced at 399.99 dollars.

On the Target site, the price, complete with shipping, is 299.99 dollars at first but morphs back to the official one when a customer aims to check out the gaming platform.

The whole thing might just be a mistake made by someone at Target, but it's unlikely that any changes would be made to the official price tag unless Microsoft had already announced that it was planning to make a change in the near future.

E3 is coming next week and industry trade shows have been used by the major hardware developers, like Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony, to announce new projects but also to unveil price drops for their existing platforms.

After Sony revealed the new Slim version of the PlayStation 3 and a price drop for it, sales of the device went up significantly on all markets.

If Microsoft actually cuts the price of the Xbox 360, which is now doing very well in the monthly numbers published by the NPD Group, it's likely that both its main rivals will have to make similar cuts in order to keep their own platforms competitive.

Nintendo is set to show off its new gaming console at E3 and rumors are saying that the platform will offer the same computing power as the current consoles from Sony and Microsoft and that will have a controller complete with a touchscreen.

Sony will also officially reveal its NGP handheld.
