How long until the PS3 lives up to its name and reputation?

You'd think that the PS3, having been waited for so long and so critically acclaimed over the past few months, would have something major to show in comparison with its rivals. Well, no. In fact, the most popular gaming system on the planet seems to be not even as good as its rivals, but even slightly poorer in comparison terms.

GameSpot saw the perfect chance to compare the PS3 with Microsoft's Xbox. The opportunity came as expected when some of the PS3's launching titles were already on the Xbox 360 platform. Graphics comparison with Need for Speed Carbon showed that the Xbox 360 is slightly better as the it has better high dynamic range lighting while the PS3 just has sharper textures.

It isn't a disaster as some have said before, but the PS3 should have lived up to its reputation bringing better everything. Not that it does much better than the PS3, but the Xbox 360 has only slightly better graphics which doesn't necessarily mean it's far better but if we take into consideration that Need for Speed Carbon was a launch title on Xbox 360 months ago, the guys at Sony didn't make use of all this time to polish up.

Having been waited with such excitement by the public, the PS3 shouldn't just be as good as its rivals but better, not to mention it still is a little pricey. I'm afraid that not even a less pricey unit will sell now, after all the bad publicity.

So how is the PS3 better? Concerning its overall potential, it is a pretty powerful unit and the machine's name alone still has an influence, but concerning the graphics evaluation, leaving the slightly sharper textures aside, it practically does nothing better. The image is just blurrier and darker. Really guys, what took you so long to release your new console if it does nothing but make a bad name for itself and you for that matter?
