Final Fantasy XIII is set to arrive on Western markets on March 9 on both the PlayStation 3, the traditional platform for the Japanese role playing game from Square Enix, and the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft.

The problem with going multiplatform has been the amount of data the new Final Fantasy title comes packed with, most of them cinematics. As Final Fantasy XIII was originally thought for the Sony home console, the Blu-ray could easily contain all the needed data but the Xbox 360 edition was set to take up more than one DVD, for sure. Now, Square Enix has confirmed the number of disks that will be sold in the package.

A Square Enix representative told VG247 that “Yes the game is on three DVDs for the 360,” before clarifying that “Players will only have to swap discs twice during their entire game.” The clarification comes as various United States retailers began listing Final Fantasy XIII as weighing in at three disks.

Final Fantasy XIII
is the biggest JRPG release of 2010 in the West and Square Enix is certainly hoping that the game will perform well and help the company in its quest to shift its focus from the Japanese market to the Western gamer.

The title marries a plot that revolves around familiar themes like humanity, the downfall of the powerful and the redemption of those who fight for a vision to a battle system, which ditches some of the innovations of Final Fantasy XII and aims for a more fluid experience, with longer attack combos and break states being crucial to success.

Isamu Kamikokuryou, who is the art director on Final Fantasy XIII, recently said that a big amount of content was cut from the final release of the game over concerns related to game length and to player attention. He stated that the content cut could actually make a whole new game.

Whats the problem with 3 discs? Final Fantasy 7 had 3 discs but you know I think that turned out pretty damn good am I right? so every 20 hours you have to change the disc for 5 seconds, ain't gonna have any impact..I laugh at your attempt to see a fault :)

is it not all a bit irrelevant as you will have to install it on the PS3 becasue the read rate of bluray is to slow and you can install it on the xbox to save changing discs.

From what i have hurd the install times on the PS3 are slow so you prob can install all 3 discs including changing discs quicker on the xbox.

Plus if you dont want to you dont have to.

Your statement is quite false, blueray speed is actually very fast. Here's a copy paste from another forum.
I read all this about ps3 bluray drive being slow. Lets compare the read rates.

Ps3's 2x blu-ray drive read at a constant 9 MB/s no matter if it is dual layer or single layer.

360's 12x DVD-rom drive It read at fluxuating rates. For single layer it reads 9.25MB/s through 15.85MB/s averaging around 10.25MB/s. In Double layer it reads 4.36MB/s through 10.57MB/s averaging around 7.93MB/s

Here is the source for the DVD-rom drive http://www.hitachi.us/supportingdocs...ead speed"

Here is the source for the Blu-ray drive http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

The ps3's constant read speed for SL and DL is faster then the average of 360's DL read speed. So what is with all this crap about ps3's read rate being slow.

Oh and btw, I have both ps3 and 360... U can't install the disk to refrain from being a disk jockey, even after u install the game on the 360's hard drive you'll still need to have the correct disk inside. I don't know how someone with an xbox doesn't know that...

people are just really stupid these days... who cares about the 5 sec. disk change rate... it only matters that we have the game to play.
