The development team at Firaxis working on the Enemy Within expansion for XCOM: Enemy Unknown is willing to offer more information on the new Mechtoid enemy, which is designed to introduce an extra level of challenge for gamers to deal with.

Ananda Gupta, lead designer for XCOM: Enemy Within, says that the unit is designed to make the Sectoid useful later in the game for the alien faction and give it a Psy shield when he uses Mind Merge.

The team also explains that, initially, the Mutton was considered for an upgrade, but the developers came to the conclusion that the unit was already powerful enough.

Firaxis adds in an official blog post that, "Mechtoids can shoot twice, although they will prefer to split their fire instead of focusing on one enemy. This is mostly for the sake of fun, and to give players some counterplay options."

Enemy Within will be launched on November and will enhance the single-player element of the base XCOM strategy title.
