The development team at Firaxis confirms that the Enemy Within expansion for XCOM: Enemy Unknown will introduce base defense missions to the modern incarnation of the strategy title.

These challenges were some of the most tense in the original version and fans have been asking for them to be a part of the reboot since it was announced, says Gamespot.

The development team says that the base defense battles are designed to be some of the toughest of the game and players will have to choose between accepting a level of damage or risking their best soldiers in order to stop the alien incursions.

Enemy Within will also introduce the EXALT human enemy faction, a new resource called Meld, mech troopers, genetic enhancements and more enemies to battle.

The expansion for XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be delivered in the middle of November on the PC, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.
