Firaxis, the developer behind XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the upcoming XCOM: Enemy Within expansion, believes that the add-on will add everything players wanted, from new maps, to soldier abilities, or enemies.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown delivered a great turn-based strategy experience, combining squad management with tactical shooting, and bringing back to life the old XCOM franchise.

Now, after reaching big sales and critical acclaim last year when it launched Enemy Unknown, developer Firaxis is putting the finishing touches on Enemy Within, a special expansion for the game.

According to Lead Designer Ananda Gupta, who talked with PS blog, the DLC brings all sorts of new things based on fan feedback, from new maps, to enemies, or abilities for soldiers.

"What we heard from players is that they wanted new maps, soldier abilities, equipment, and enemies to fight. So that’s what we focused on! We’ve added almost half as many maps as we shipped in the base game, and we’ve added new gameplay elements to all of the maps with the inclusion of Meld."

The new Meld resource, as well as the new weapons for the fresh soldier abilities, are certainly going to tempt players into starting a new playthrough of the game.

"Meld gives players a new resource they can use in the strategy side of the game, and new abilities for their soldiers. We’ve also added some new grenades, and the MEC troopers have a special suite of weapons on their exoskeletons — including flamethrowers and mine launchers. Then we’ve added enemies that fit well into the progression of the invasion, including the Mechtoid and the Seeker, which fit very specific tactical roles for the aliens."

XCOM: Enemy Within will launch as an expansion for the PC version of Enemy Unknown, while PS3 and Xbox 360 owners will have to buy the XCOM: Enemy Unknown Commander Edition to access it.
