Developer Firaxis and publisher 2K Games have announced that their strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown is now available for pre-order via the Steam digital distribution service from Valve, with a number of rewards for those willing to pay before the game is launched.

The two companies have also introduced a tiered reward system, which basically means that gamers have an incentive to get their friends interested in the game.

The initial reward is the Elite Soldier Pack, which comes with customization options, deco packs and a soldier from the classic game.

The second tier includes three items that can be used in Team Fortress 2, a crafty chair, a Vigilant pin and an alien skin for the Pyro.

The third reward is a free copy of Civilization V, another strategy game from Firaxis.

Firaxis has not made it clear how many pre-orders are expected for each of the included tiers.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be launched on October 9 on the PC, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.
