XBMC, an open source (GPL) software media player and entertainment hub for digital media that is available for multiple platforms, has just reached version 13.2 RC1.

The XBMC developers are still powering on with the development of the XBMC 13.2 branch and they have made a number of fixes and other changes to the distribution. The devs are rapidly reaching the end of the development cycle for the distro and users should start getting ready for the 14.x release, which will also bear a new name, Kodi.

The XBMC project is changing its name to Kodi, but it will do so with the release of the 14.x branch, which is still a long way off.

“After three beta releases, we are happy to announce our 13.2 Release Candidate. This follows a couple of months after the 13.1 release, and is considered a small bug fix release. Unfortunately we cannot fix all things reported. Below you will find a list of most important fixes included in this release.”

“Do note that this release only contains fixes and no new features. So it should be safe to install on top of any of the current 13.X releases. In due time we will of course release a 13.2 stable version after we are confident there are no regressions compared to 13.1 stable,” reads the announcement.

The developers also have some important notifications for the users of Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.10, which have been dropped by their respective developers. This means that these OSes won't receive any more specific binary builds and support.

According to the changelog, a bitstream conversion fix for some BD mkv ISO rips has been implemented, the included PVR add-on has been updated, FTP TLS is now working properly, a problem with overlapping subtitles has been fixed, accented letters have been corrected, a prompt for master pin is now provided in case the add-on manager is locked, and several bugs and memory leaks have been fixed.

Keep in mind that if you upgrade to this version, you might encounter some problems, especially with the add-ons, which might not work. If you are using any particular add-ons, you might want to wait until the final version of this software is released.

Check out the official announcement for a complete list of new features, updates, and changes. You can download XBMC 13.2 RC1 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
