Originally planned for the beginning of this year, the X Server 1.6 was released yesterday, on the 25th of February, and brings, among many bugfixes, version 1.3 of RandR (Rotate and Restore) extension, DRI2 (Direct Rendering Infrastructure), Xinput 1.5 along with Input Device Properties and predictable pointer acceleration. The Input Device Properties (IDP) allow users to attach certain properties to a device. These properties can be changed even if the server doesn't know their details. IDP can be used either by the server, the drivers or the clients.

The predictable pointer acceleration project aims to replace the previous, deficient, acceleration code. Besides its main feature – predictability – the code provides independent downscaling, acceleration profiles, and adaptive deceleration. The Resize and Restore 1.3 version now supports projective transforms, GetScreenResourcesCurrent, panning and primary outputs.

Some of the patches for X Server 1.6.0 are:

· Added "Extensions" section to the xorg.conf main page;
· A proper handling of separate alpha maps in Composite fallback;
· DRICreateDrawable returns TRUE for pixmaps;
· Added XkbDir to Files config section;
· x86emu as default;
· xfree86: exclusive use of evdev ruleset in Linux;
· xfree86: Forcing of RAW mode in Linux;
· The correct error message is shown if the config file is not found;
· The RgbPath keyword from xorg.conf is now a non-fatal error;
· Pressing a multimedia key will no longer cause the X server to crash.

Starting with this new version, the next features are no longer available:

· The cfb, afb and mfb/xf1bpp X server libraries;
· X server utilities: xorgconfig, xorgcfg, ioport, kbd_mode;
· Two unmaintained variants: Xgl and Xprt;
· Command line flags for the X server: -co, -bestrefresh, -showunresolved;
· Support for the AppGroup, EVI, MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD, TOG-CUP, XTrap, XFree86-Misc and XEvIE extensions, as they are either obsolete, unused, broken or unmaintained.
