Another day, another pocket projector seems to be the trend these days. We've talked lately about no less than three such devices (from Optoma, Aiptek and Epoq), but it seems that they're not at all alone out there, since Japanese company Kairen has just announced its upcoming X Pro920M projector, which pretty much fits the profile of all the other products of this type, whether we're talking about its form factor, features or size.
First of all, the form factor. The X Pro920M is not exactly the best-looking pocket projector out there, compared to other similar devices. However, size is not necessarily an issue, since this device measures just 90 mm x 80 mm x 44 mm, at a weight of around 190 grams.
The device uses LCoS projection technology and features a manual focus system. Unfortunately, the resolution of the displayed images is far from fantastic (640 x 480 pixels), and the same pretty much goes for the other features as well, whether we're talking about the contrast ratio (100:1) or the image size (25 inches at a distance of 1 meter).
Connectivity-wise, Kairen's product is also pretty standard (as far as pocket-projectors go), since, besides the power connector (12.5W estimated power requirement), it also sports a Mini AV jack, plus a VGA connector. No audio output, though, just a built-in 1 W mono speaker, which is far from what we might call "powerful."
The X Pro920M is not the most expensive of the host of projectors recently released on the market, but it comes quite close. Thus, while Optoma's Pico leads the pack with a $430 price tag, the device from Kairen comes quite close, since it will retail for around 407.67 US dollars (39,800 Japanese Yen) when it arrives in stores, in mid-January 2009.
