As it happens these days with all major superhero franchises, it could be tricky for a newbie to get up to speed with everything going on in the X-Men universe. As the seventh film in the series, which is actually a sequel to the reboot that came out in 2011, dropped in theaters last night, 20th Century Fox is already working away at the threequel, confirmed as “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

If you’re a fan of superhero movies, particularly from Marvel, you know how these things work, how the studio keeps viewers on their toes by inserting more or less juicy hints at the end of the film, after the end credits.

That sequence, which can occasionally run up to a full minute, is called an Easter Egg. If you haven’t seen “X-Men: Days of Future Past” yet, make sure you wait until past the end credits to see one.

Even if you’re a fan of the X-Men films, all seven of them, unless you’re familiar with the story in the comics, the Easter Egg at the end of “Days of Future Past” will leave you scratching your head in wonder at what you just saw.

This Easter Egg is short: it shows a hooded figure with his back to the camera, arms raised high in the air, as if he’s commanding the scene before him. It turns out to be a very impressive one, because it shows the Pyramids being built so yes, “X-Men” is rewriting history again.

At one point, if you look carefully in the background behind the hooded figure, you see 4 horsemen: they are the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and the hooded man is Apocalypse himself, one of the most dangerous villains ever featured in X-Men comics.

“What you see is Apocalypse sort of using his powers to manipulate the Pyramids. And in the shot, you can see The Four Horseman sort of in shadow, or silhouette,” Kinberg confirms for CinemaBlend.

“Now, when we make the movie, it will not take place in ancient times. We went back and forth a lot on… what that scene should be. Bryan [Singer, the director] and I just locked into this idea of seeing Apocalypse at the height of his power and glory, which is what we imagined would have been in Egyptian times. It was just to give a tease of, ‘This guy is super-powerful, and there was a moment in time when he was essentially treated as a god, and he’s going to rise again in X-Men: Apocalypse’,” Kinberg continues.

Total Film also caught up with the writer of “Days of Future Past” and asked him the same question of the story arc in “Apocalypse.” You can find his response in the video below: he basically says the same thing as above, but also details which of the Mutants from the latest installment will appear in the threequel.
